And to be complete, REACH will also be a major contributor
under the activities on the non-toxic environment or the 7th
Environmental Action Programme. Substitution will play a
crucial role in that discussion as well – amongst other issues
like combination effects and vulnerable groups exposed
to these combinations. The European industry has to be
prepared to think and reflect on all these topics we are
confronted with. We are coming closer to thinking about
changing business models to bring this into a broader
context and a long-term vision on how chemicals will be
handled without negative effects for human health and
the environment, as the engagement in 2002 at the World
Summit of Sustainable Development in Johannesburg
mentioned. 2020 is tomorrow, but we are transforming
our world to come to the 2030 agenda for sustainable
development (9).

Environmental contaminants from land to sea: continuities and
interface in environmental toxicology and chemistry
