SILAB is writing a new chapter on dermal segmentation and its matrisome

HPC Today

The work of the SILAB advanced research department and the research team of Dr. Florence Ruggiero on dermal segmentation and its matrisome has been recognized by the scientific community with the publication of a letter to the editor in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology (JID).

A major scientific discovery on the papillary and reticular dermis.
The uppermost layer of the dermis, called the papillary dermis, and the lower layer, called the reticular dermis, are structurally and functionally different. The fibroblasts, which are the cells that synthesize the extracellular matrix, are supposed to be responsible for this segmentation. “Dermal segmentation is a valuable biological research signature for SILAB” affirms Brigitte Closs, Deputy Managing Director for Research and Development, SILAB. “When we started working on this topic in 2007, we naturally contacted Dr. Florence Ruggiero, CNRS Research Director, and her team members, who are internationally renowned for their expert knowledge of the biology of the extracellular matrix.”

For the first time, Dr. Florence Ruggiero’s research team and the SILAB advanced research department highlighted a marker of gene expression specific to the papillary and reticular fibroblasts related to the matrisome, defined as all of the genes encoding the proteins of the extracellular matrix and its related proteins.

“This letter to the editor in one of the most prestigious scientific journals of dermatology provides undeniable recognition of the quality of the research work undertaken by the two teams. It will strengthen our expertise in this area and offer new prospects for the development of tailored, innovative and effective natural cosmetic solutions in particular to combat cutaneous aging. It could also have consequences for the bio-engineering of skin substitutes to make them even closer to the physiological reality of the skin” concludes Brigitte Closs.

From advanced research to the development of two SILAB patented active ingredients
– PAPILACTYL D®: the only natural active ingredient available on the cosmetic market since 2007, which
meets the targeted needs of the papillary dermis to combat the effects of aging.
– RETILACTYL D®: a natural firming active ingredient that corrects the impact of photo-aging on the reticular
dermis.
