Abstract

The food industry expects benefits from the use of nanosciences, nanotechnologies and nanomaterials.There are on-going debates on the definition of nanomaterials at EU level, which has yet to be approved. The adoption ofa clear legal framework will have positive effects for the industry and the consumers. At present risk analysis on a case-by-case basis is considered a priority, and the existing legislation is thought to address nanomaterials as a whole despite thatthere are numerous gaps.
