Chimica Oggi/Chemistry Today
Contract manufacturing in life sciences has always beenconfined to small Pharma and biotech companies. BigPharma have used, until now, contract manufacturingorganizations (CMOs) only to meet excess demand beyondtheir own manufacturing capacities or for packaging needs inparticular geographic areas. Small Biotechnology firms havehired them because they needed to choose a more logicaland economical pathway. Today, increased competition, patent expirations, revenue pressures, mergers andacquisitions have led also Big Pharma companies to recognizethe value to outsource chemistry research and manufacturingto contract organizations.
