ChemCon celebrates its 25th business anniversary. The company was founded as a start-up by Dr. Peter Gockel and Dr. Raphael Vogler, both graduates of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Freiburg, Germany. ChemCon currently employs 130 professionals and produces active pharmaceutical ingredients for customers all over the world.

For their doctoral theses, Raphael Vogler and Peter Gockel researched inorganic-complex compounds that potentially had a future medical application. In cooperation with an American company, they were able to develop syntheses and thus lay the foundation for their own company.

In 1997 ChemCon was founded as a GbR (civil law partnership) and registered as a GmbH (limited liability company) in 1999. Since its foundation ChemCon has been involved in the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients as well as the optimisation of production processes as a service provider for the pharmaceutical industry.

The focus of the ChemCon’s work is on the synthesis of so-called “small molecules”, organic chemical molecules, inorganic salts and complexes as well as medical polymers.

One of the major highlights of the new start-up company was the first inspection by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration of the United States) in 2000. ChemCon passed this inspection at the first attempt without any observations and has been able to exceed in four further FDA audits to date. ChemCon also passed the officially required German inspections by the Regional Council of Tuebingen – 13 times in total since 2003 – without any observations. Furthermore, ChemCon has been successfully audited more than 200 times by its customers.

The company which started off in the basement of one of the two founders is now located in the Innovation Centre BioTechpark Freiburg. Offering a state-of-the-art working environment ChemCon has created jobs for 130 employees with a wide range of training qualifications.

In addition to its excellent chemical expertise, ChemCon is characterised by its ability to work according to GMP (good manufacturing practice and quality assurance guidelines). This quality standard is essential for the production of active ingredients used in medicines.

Over the years, ChemCon has been able to establish an excellent reputation on the international market. Today the Freiburg-based company works for partners all over the world.
In addition to its focus on the synthesis of organic and inorganic molecules, ChemCon has been able to build up great know-how in the field of polymer chemistry under GMP. These polymers are used in the pharmaceutical industry as active ingredients and for the formulation of drugs.

A state-of-the-art analytical department that has also been offering its services as pure contract analysis (detached from synthesis projects) for several years, rounds off the company’s product portfolio.
