Healthy eating during pregnancy is crucial for baby’s and mother’s health

A healthful diet is important both in preparation for pregnancy and during pregnancy. Pregnancy is a time where nutritional requirements are increased due to the demands of the growing baby. A healthy diet and lifestyle are particularly important for a healthy pregnancy as they affect both mother’s and baby’s health.

Poor nutrition and low micronutrient levels in pregnancy are also linked to higher risk of pregnancy complications and health problems in the child: low levels of folate before or during pregnancy increase the risk of neural tube defects, low calcium intake during pregnancy can influence bone development in children, while low levels of Vitamin D are linked to pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes.

Ahead of World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August), EUFIC shared the latest content providing inclusive and actionable food facts on healthy and balanced nutrition during pregnancy and early infancy, developed by the team of scientists at the European Food Information Council (EUFIC).
