How to handle air sensitive reagents?

Chimica Oggi-Chemistry Today

AcroSeal packaging ensures that you have access to high-quality and low-moisture products every use, guaranteeing improved yield and consistency of your research experiments while reducing chemical waste

During the daily work in the laboratory, it is often necessary to use air- and moisture-sensitive reagents and, for that reason, it is important to learn how to handle them in a proper way. For Example, this is required for Grignard reagents, used to form C-C bonds; for alkyllithium products used in several applications such as nucleophilic addition and substitutions and more; and for hydride reducing agents. A wrong manipulation can cause different issues: the synthesis couldn’t occur or could give poor yield as a result; or several by-products could be obtained leading a challenging purification. Some of these products could lose their quality if not well stored (i.e. dry solvents) or, in some cases, can be pyrophoric and spontaneously igniting in contact with air or water.

How can we reduce these difficulties? All the products able to react with moisture, oxygen or both must be protected under an inert atmosphere. There are designed areas (glove box) or equipment (fume hood vacuum line, Schlenk lines) that should be chosen before starting to work with sensitive chemicals. The right quality of reagents and the packaging to store them without significant decomposition is also a critical point that needs to be considered.

AcroSeal has created a system to safely handle material used in research and development applications and to keep it dry between repeated use. This is possible thanks to the special caps that ensure the transfer of the content minimizing the exposure of the air. AcroSeal is a packaging solution designed to enable safe handling of these types of materials which are used in a variety of research and development applications, including NMR analysis and studies in drug discovery, agrochemicals, flavors and fragrances, and more.

We offer a large range of products in AcroSeal packaging. Over the past 25 years, AcroSeal packaging has gone through many innovation cycles to always bring the best results to the market. Over 2000 Thermo Scientific products are now available in AcroSeal packaging to help you when handling sensitive reagents.
