IBSA: improving people’s quality of life with “drugs in the best form”

Chimica Oggi-Chemistry Today

Founded in Lugano (Switzerland) in 1945, IBSA (Institut Biochimique SA) is a pharmaceutical company operating in over 80 Countries on 5 continents and employing 1.600 people through its 20 subsidiaries located in Europe, China and the United States.

Part of the Institute Biochimique SA Group, IBSA Farmaceutici is headquartered in Lodi (Italy) with two production plants near Milan and three R&D laboratories. IBSA Farmaceutici researches and produces drugs, medical devices and food supplements, which are then sold all over the world.

Innovation has a central role in the business model: to take generics to the next level, be it by improving their bioavailability, patient acceptance, or easiness to be administered by physicians, patients, or caregivers. IBSA has 82 patent families on ground-breaking pharmaceutical technologies to transform existing therapeutic solutions with known properties into simpler, more evolved instruments of care.

PEARLtec technology, for example, is a process for obtaining softgel (soft capsules) that allows a liquid matrix, in a suspension or a gel, to be incorporated into a continuous soft gelatine shell, thus improving both the oral intake of the medicinal product and patient compliance.

Moreover, Orodispersible Films (ODFs) are an innovative pharmaceutical form that can be taken without water so to be good even for use outside the home. For the production of its ODFs, IBSA choses maltodextrins as the main polymer, taking to industrial scale a patented formulation platform that forms the basis of the IBSA FilmTech technology

IBSA also develops sterile pre-filled syringes with different capacities to assure the right volume of product and reduce the risk of errors, and Bag-on-valve (BoV) packaging technology, so that the product, be it solid or liquid, is placed inside a protective bag, contained inside an aluminium can. One of the advantages of BoV is that the compressed gas used to dispense product is not mixed with it, rather it is pressurised into the space between the bag and the can.

Technologies developed by IBSA let the Company finds effective care solutions covering 10 therapeutic areas: reproductive medicine, endocrinology, pain and inflammation, osteoarticular, aesthetic medicine, dermatology, urogynaecology, cardiometabolic, respiratory, consumer health.

Its commitment to Research aims to innovate by developing therapeutic systems that respond, in a concrete and functional way, to the real needs and requirements of the individual enhancing the person beyond the disease.
