Croda – Responding to the new challenges of the cosmetics industry with biotechnology

HPC Today

With limitless potential, biotechnology is inspired by nature. Through biotechnology, we can benefit from the properties of living organisms without impacting the environment.

It allows us to offer smart alternatives for the consumers’ increasing demands for performance and sustainability.

Within our industry, biotechnology uses the cellular and biomolecular processes of living organisms outside of animals in order to develop cosmetic products. Frédéric De Baene is R&D Biotechnology Director at the Croda Group “I am always curious and amazed to know what nature has developed to evolve, survive and defend itself. Indeed, nature is extremely powerful and offers us its incredible capacities to produce molecules of interest”.

Soon, Croda will present its first functional ingredient based on micro-organism biofermentation. In the meantime, a report dedicated to this promising technology is now available. It deals with the benefits, innovations, opportunities and obstacles of biotechnology. You can download it here for free:

Sederma supports Croda in the development of bio-based ingredients. Sederma is a leading developer of cosmetic active ingredients and a dynamic player in the biotechnology sector. One third of its catalogue is made up of biotechnology products.

Its confidence in the unlimited potential of biotechnology has led Croda to strengthen its innovation and production capacity in this field. In 2012, Croda acquired the Italian company IRB, an expert in plant biotechnology, and in 2018, Nautilus, a Canadian company working on marine micro-organisms.

Using science, intelligently, through biotechnology allows us to offer consumers bio-based ingredients that fit in with their expectations in terms of sustainability and performance. This fits perfectly with Croda’s commitment to be Climate, Land and People Positive by 2030.
