During the last twenty years the development and commercialization oftechnology to manufacture single enantiomer pharmaceuticals andintermediates has been dominated by the developed countries of the Westand Japan. In that same timeframe two other trends have emerged. Firstlythe sales of single enantiomer pharmaceuticals are far greater than eitherracemates or achiral drugs. For example, in 2008 nine of the top twelvebest selling drugs were single enantiomers, including the best selling drugof all time Lipitor (Atorvastatin), with worldwide sales of around $14 Billion. ...
