CROs/CMOs need to be much more than just a supplier

In our CROs / CMOs supplement published in 2013 (1), We learned that the globe-wide demands for outsourcing services, both contract R&D and manufacturing, will be strong in the foreseeable future and that competition and differentiation is key for companies to emerge and be successful. Many companies are in fact struggling to find competitive advantage.
The pharmaceutical industry is in fact continually looking to accelerate and streamline the product development process to bring new products to the market efficiently, but challenges to face are outstanding. Companies continue to face pressures from shifting regulatory compliance requirements across different markets. This is combined with ongoing concerns about illegal drug manufacturing and counterfeit products. Sustainable and efficient production of chemicals with the least impact on the environment remains also a difficult task, given as already said the various hurdles faced by the industry such as cost-effectiveness, regulatory, legal, robustness, “greenness” and safety (2).
