Abstract

Legislating on food flavourings in the European Union (EU) dates back to 1988 when the first framework Directivewas adopted to ensure the safe use of flavourings across the internal market. The legislation on flavourings in the EU is furtherharmonised through the adoption of three Regulations: one on smoke flavourings adopted in 2003, one to update and replace the old framework Regulation and one to create the common authorisation procedure to amend the two Unionlists of flavourings, both of which were adopted in 2008.
