Abstract

Photostabilized ultraviolet (UV) filter systemsthat incorporate both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B(UVB) filters (referred to as “broad spectrum” in theUnited States of America) are an excellent way to deliverbroad-spectrum sun protection. However, they do notensure that sunscreen users are protected in and ofthemselves. These systems must be incorporated intoformulation bases that deposit uniform films, resist rinse-offand rub-off, and deliver aesthetics that encourageconsistent and ongoing consumer use. This articlepresents successful approaches to formulating sunscreenspray, gel, balm, stick, cream and lotion products thatsatisfy the needs of different types of consumers.
