Abstract

Treatments involving fluorinated gases and radio-frequencyplasma-enhanced fluorination (PEF) constitute exceptionaltools for modifying at low temperature the surfaceproperties of materials. These techniques are adaptedto yield nanosized functionalized materials and will beillustrated by several examples, including carbon-basedelectrode materials, functionalized silica and silicates, switchable hydrophobic-hydrophilic porous alumina. X-rayphotoelectron spectroscopy is a preferred method forcharacterizing the resulting surface modifications.
