While sports nutrition science has traditionally focused onenergy and electrolyte balance, emerging researchindicates that proteins, protein hydrolysates and amino acidsplay significant roles in ensuring optimal nutrition for exerciseand sports. Proteins, protein hydrolysates and certain aminoacids have infact been shown to induce high rates of proteinsynthesis in the muscle after resistance exercise, whileenhancing muscular glycogen synthesis in post-enduranceexercise recovery (1, 2, 3, 4). These components are thereforeessential metabolic requirements in the various exercisephases, including pre- and postexerciserecovery phases.
