Abstract

New initiatives, technology and discoveries are revealing novel insights into the relationship between the microbial communities in the gut and inflammatory bowel diseases. DNA sequencing technological advances have made sequencing the metagenome of the microbial community feasible with regard to both cost and data analysis. Technology has also allowedfor population based human genetic studies that reveal that IBD is a complex disease syndrome that is the result of both microbial provocation and genetic susceptibility.
