A growing bank of research highlights the effectiveness of omega-3 LCPUFAs in improving health and wellbeing. Yet despite the substantial scientific evidence, global dietary intake remains low. In fact, it has been estimated that less than 20% of the world’s population consumes the recommended daily intake of 250 mg/d. (1) There are also concerns that rising demand for fish oil – traditionally the go-to-source of omega-3 – may exceed availability in the future, as overfishing and environmental issues mean that there will not be enough fish in the ocean to feed the world’s growing population.

This growing pressure on natural resources, together with the increasing popularity of flexitarian, vegetarian and vegan diets, means it is more important than ever to look for sustainable alternatives to fish oil. This has opened up an exciting opportunity for dietary supplement manufacturers to develop innovative plant-based omega-3 products that meet the needs of today’s health-conscious and environmentally-driven consumers.
